TEKO - NEEDLE PAINTING

Teko is worked in the method of needle painting which is the blending of straight long and short stitches using different shades of DMC floss.

WORK IN PROGRESS

The outline of Teko is traced on to tracing paper and then transferred onto the fabric using the prick and pounce method. The design was hand painted onto the fabric using white acrylic paints.

Teko's tail is worked first as it is the most behind part of his body. The tail is worked in rows of stem stitch, using five shades of white and browns.

Teko's left leg is worked next. A split stitch line is worked around the left leg and then the left leg is worked in short long and short stitches, starting at the tip of the foot working up to the top of the leg.

A split stitch line is worked along the chest across the top of the left leg and down his back across the tail. Teko's pink belly is worked next in four shades and then a split stitch line is worked across the bottom of the stomach and around the right leg.

The right leg is worked in long and short stitch beginning at the tip of the foot and working up the leg using 7 shades of off white. The long and short stitch is continued up the right side of the body, the stitches cover the split stitch line at the edge of the body.

The middle leg is worked next in long and short stitches beginning at the tip of the foot and working up the leg.

The chest is worked continuing from the top of the leg, working the long and short stitch in rows across the body. To create shadow a darker shade of off-white is used on the left edge of the body and under the chin. Five shades of white and off white are used on the chest.

A split stitch line is worked along the bottom of the face along the chin to raise the head above the body, the stitches of the head will be worked over the split stitch line.

As Teko is a curly haired dog, curls are embroidered over the hair already worked using the same colour thread as used on his body. Each curl is worked in stem stitch.

The ears are woked in split stitch starting at the tip of the ears working to the top of the ears.

The forehead and chin are worked next in long and short stitch. The tongue is worked and then the hair above the tongue and around the nose and eyes is worked.

A split stitch line is worked around the eyes and the nose in preperation for the satin stitch.

The eyes and nose are worked last in satin stitch.
