PYGMY
OWL - NEEDLE PAINTING
The
Pygmy Owl is worked in the method of needle painting which is the
blending of straight long and short stitches using different shades
of DMC floss.
The
Pygmy Owl is worked on a good quality 100% cotton off white muslin
fabric in a 9 inch by 9 inch stretcher bar frame. The
fabric is pinned onto the stretcher bar frame so that it is drum tight.
WORK IN PROGRESS
The
embroidery is worked from the background to the foreground so that a
dimensional picture is created. I use one strand of DMC floss in the
needle at the time. First the robin design is transferred onto the
fabric using the Prick
and Pounce Method.
-
The
first row of long and short stitch is worked along the bottom of the breast.
-
The
breast is then worked in 7 rows of long and short stitch.
-
The
head is then worked in three rows of long and short stitch.
-
The
eyebrows, eyes and beak are worked in satin stitch.

-
The
remainder of the branch is worked adding in french knots to
represent the roughness of the bark
-
The
branches on either side of the bird are worked in stem stitch to
complete the embroidery.
