"Exquisite
Schwalm" is a book dedicated to the creation of an
"Exquisite Sampler" with 110 double sided pages of detailed
instructions on how to set out the 49 squares and work the intriguing
mousetooth hem edge. The sampler is a sampling of 48 of the
many varied filling stitches found in Schwalm Embroidery.
The
sampler measures approximately 23 inch by 23 inch (57 1/2 cms by 57
1/2 cms) on 34 count linen fabric.
"Exquisite
Schwalm" has detailed instructions for each filling stitch in
each square.
Work
all 48 filling stitches or work a variety in a checker board pattern
as in Sylvia's interpretation above.
For
those who do not want to do the sampler but love to do Schwalm
embroidery "Exquisite Schwalm" is a valuable resource full
of wonderful ideas for stitches and patterns to fill the motifs in
your design.

What is Schwalm Embroidery?
Schwalm
embroidery, pronounced "shvalm", is a regional or folk
embroidery which comes from, and is named after, the Schwalm River
Valley, in the state of Hesse in North Central Germany. In Germany
the embroidery is called "Schwalmer Weisstickerei" which
means, "white stitchery from the Schwalm". It is a
beautiful form of whitework embroidery traditionally worked on white
evenweave linen with white thread. Techniques include some surface
embroidery, drawn threadwork, pulled threadwork, needlelace and
hemstitching. The most commonly used motifs are hearts, tulips,
circles and doves with curving lines and lovely festoons.
