VELUM TRACING PAPER (TSVT)

Velum tracing paper is used for the prick and pounce method of transferring embroidery designs (Applique, Brazilian, Free Embroidery,  Goldwork, Needle Painting, Modern Jacobean, Traditional Jacobean and White Work) onto fabric. The Velum tracing paper is placed over the design to be worked and all the lines of the design are traced onto the tracing paper.

A No. 10 embroidery needle is used to prick holes along all the pencil lines on the tracing paper puncturing the design lines at 1/8th of and inch (3 mm) intervals, when all the lines have been pricked the tracing paper is held up to the light to check that all the lines have been pricked. Horizontal and vertical center lines are drawn onto the pricking in preparation of positioning the pricking onto the fabric. (See pounce below, for pouncing the design onto the fabric).

PRICKER 1 (TSP1)

PRICKER 2 (TSP2)

A pricker is used to prick the lines on the velum tracing paper for the transfer method of prick and pounce. A No. 10 embroidery needle or similar size needle is screwed into the end of the pricker. The wooden or metal shaft is a devise to hold the needle enabling easier pricking of the design lines on the velum tracing paper.

PRICKER DETAILS

(TSP1) The pricker is made out of hardwood with brass needle holder and thumb set screw.

Length of pricker: 4 3/4 inches (11 1/2 cm)

(TSP2) The pricker is made out of a thin chrome plated brass handle with 4-jaw steel chuck on one end permitting easy exchange of needle, needles can be screwed tightly into the pricker.

Length of pricker: 3 3/4 inches (9 1/2 cm)

PRICKER NEEDLES

No. 10 embroidery needles are most commonly used for pricking the velum tracing paper. No. 9 or No. 8 embroidery needles can also be used but the holes made by these needles are larger and will allow more pounce onto the fabric when transferring the design onto the fabric.

No. 10 embroidery needles can be purchased from me individually or by the packet see Needles.

POUNCE AND POUNCING TOOL

Pounce is used in the prick and pounce method of transferring embroidery designs onto fabric, (Applique, Brazilian, Free Embroidery,  Goldwork, Needle Painting, Modern Jacobean, Traditional Jacobean and White Work).

The pricked tracing paper is centralised on to fabric (smooth side up), see velum tracing paper above, for the transfer paper used. The tracing paper is held in place with weights on the corners of the tracing paper or by pinning the tracing paper to the fabric.

The Pattern Pounce (pouncing tool) is used for transferring patterns from the pricked tracing paper pattern to the fabric. The Pattern Pounce consists of a felt pad on a wood support and is double headed with a 1" pad on one end and a 3/4" pad on the other.

The pattern pounce is dipped into the pounce and the excess pounce is tapped back into the container, the pounce is rubbed over the whole of the design taking care not to go over the edges of the tracing paper. The tracing paper is carefully lifted away leaving a pounce outline of the design on the fabric.

Excess pounce on the fabric is blown away, then the pounce lines are drawn over with lead pencil or white pencil depending on the colour of the fabric or painted over with permanent paint i.e. acrylics or oils.

Any remaining pounce on the fabric is removed by tapping the back of the work and brushing the remainder of the pounce away with a baby brush or cotton wool puff - brushing in towards the design.

Extra pounce on the tracing paper can be transferred back into the container.

18 Grams of Pounce (1 tub) at least 100 x transfers from 10 inch by 10 inch prickings.

75 grams of Pounce (1 bag) will do at least 415 x transfers from 10 inch by 10 inch prickings.

ERASABLE PENS

I sell two types of erasable pens:

  1. The water erasable marking pen has a pin-point tip that produces a very fine line. Use the pen for drawing embroidery designs onto fabric. When the embroidery is complete the blue pen line can be washed away. On rare occassions certain dyes in material (dyes containing red in particular) may make marks difficult to remove. If you do not want to wash your fabric then the air erasable pen can be used instead.

  2. The air erasable marking pen has a pin-point tip that produces a very fine line. The fine line marking pen makes a bright purple mark, the marks will vanish without washing, but do not iron the over the marks as it will set the marks and they cannot be removed.

COSTS

(TSEP) Fine Line Erasable Marking Pens: $4.95 CDN
