I offer a range of Needles for different embroidery techniques.

SHORT BEADING NEEDLES BY JOHN JAMES

The short beading needles come in size 12 (smallest) or 10 and come in a packet of four. They have a long eye for easier threading, the needle is 1 1/4 inch (3 cm) long.

Sharp Point: The short beading needle with the sharp point is excellent for goldwork embroidery when stitching down No. 7 Purl chips and smaller, for fine bead work on closely woven fabrics and long and short stitch using YLI silk thread.

Ball Point: The short beading needle with the Tapestry (ball) point is excellent for fine bead work on counted fabrics and for working counted embroidery stitches on a fabric with a high thread count i.e. 40 + threads to the inch, using a fine embroidery thread such as YLI silk thread.

CREWEL EMBROIDERY NEEDLES BY RICHARD HEMMING & SON

Crewel embroidery needles have a long eye for easier threading a sharp point to the needle so that the stitches can be worked close together and there is more control for placing the stitches. This needle is not suitable for counted thread work as the point of the needle would easily catch the threads of the fabric, distorting the counted work.

Size 10: Used for Needle Painting, Goldwork, Modern Jacobean, Fine White Work, Shadow work and other fine embroidery techniques that are worked on a tightly woven fabric and is a very fine needle. Suitable for one or two strands of floss or silk thread and sewing cotton.

Size 9 and 8: Used for Fine Embroidery and sewing, two strands of floss and for No. 12 Perle Cotton Thread.

Size 7: Used for Fine Embroidery and sewing, two - three strands of floss and No. 8 Perle Cotton Thread.

Size 6 and 5: Used for Traditional Jacobean and other coarse embroidery techniques that are worked on a tightly woven fabric. Suitable for one or two strands of crewel wool and metallic threads.

Size 4: Used for Mountmellick and other coarse embroidery techniques that are worked on a tightly woven fabric. Suitable for Mountmellick thread, three strands of crewel wool and perle cotton.

Size 3, 2 and 1: Used for coarse embroidery techniques that are worked on a tightly woven fabric.

TAPESTRY NEEDLES BY JOHN JAMES

Tapestry needles have a blunt end to the point of the needle so that the needle does not catch or pierce the threads of the counted fabric when working from one hole to the next. The tapestry needle has a long eye for easier threading and the needles range in size from small size 28 to large size 20.

Tapestry Needle Size 28 by John James, Packet of 5: Used for Blackwork, Cross-stitch, Pulled work and other counted techniques on 32 count fabric to 50 count fabrics.

Metal Top Wire Needle Threaders

Plastic Top Wire Needle threads

NEEDLE THREADERS

Wire needle threaders for all sizes of needles. Enables you to thread the really small eyed needles.

The metal wire loop of the needle threader is threaded into the eye of the needle (much easier than threading in a strand of thread), the thread is then threaded into the wire loop of the threader and then the wire loop and embroidery thread are pulled back through the eye of the needle, the thread is now threaded into the needle.

The needle threaders are particularly useful for the No. 10 crewel embroidery needles used for Needle Painting, White Work, Shadow Work and Goldwork, the No. 28 tapestry needles used for blackwork and the No. 7 crewel embroidery needle for Jacobean and the No. 12 quilting needle.

NEEDLE MINDERS (TSSNM)

Needlework Magnets

Beautiful and unique needlework magnets hold your extra needles while stitching your embroidery or cross-stitch. The raised areas of the minders (accept Nita's Peacock) are carved out of resin and have remarkable detail.

HOW TO USE THE MINDER

As many of us know it is easier to have 2 or 3 needles on the go at one time when working on an embroidery or cross-stitch so that you can carry the thread from one location on the embroidery to another. When you are not using one of the threads it is easier to leave the thread hanging off the embroidery to one side rather than finishing the thread and having to begin it again later on.

Sometimes when one has several needles on the go the threads become tangled. The best way to prevent this is to place a needle minder on the front of the fabric at the side of the frame, and place the separate magnet on the back of the fabric directly below the needle minder on the front. The minder is held in place by the magnet on the back.  The needle and threads that are not in use can then be brought up to the front of the work and placed on top of the magnetic needle minder to keep the thread out of the way (see picture of needle minder in use on the squirrel embroidery below).

When you turn the frame over to finish a thread off you do not have needles and threads dangling off the embroidery as the needles are held on the minder.
