MUSLIN FABRIC (MF)

Southern Belle Muslin fabric (Calico in European terms) is a 100% cotton fabric.

This wonderful fine quality muslin fabric has a 220  thread count (regular muslin fabric thread count starts at 70) and makes an ideal ground fabric for Needle Painting and is the only muslin cotton fabric that I have found that I can recommend for needle painting.

The warp and weft threads are closely woven allowing for very precise stitching. The fabric is soft to the feel, has no brown specks as in some muslins and has a very consistent weave unlike some broad cloths.

The muslin fabric can be also used as a supporting fabric for the Goldwork and silk fabrics embroidery projects.

A one yard length of the muslin fabric is 44 inches (110 cm ) wide. The fabric does not come washed.

COLOUR

Off white, speckless.

CREWEL EMBROIDERY NEEDLES BY RICHARD HEMMING & SON

Crewel embroidery needles have a long eye for easier threading a sharp point to the needle so that the stitches can be worked close together and there is more control for placing the stitches. This is the best type of needle for needle painting and I recommend the smallest needle - size 10 to get precise stitching.

Size 10: Used with one strand of DMC floss or one strand of silk thread.

Size 9 and 8: Used with two or three strands of DMC floss or silk thread.

(NCEN15) Packet of 15 Crewel Embroidery Needles: $2.50 Canadian Dollars

NEEDLE MINDERS (TSSNM)

Needlework Magnets

Beautiful and unique needlework magnets hold your extra needles while stitching your embroidery or cross-stitch. The raised areas of the minders (accept Nita's Peacock) are carved out of resin and have remarkable detail.

HOW TO USE THE MINDER

As many of us know it is easier to have 2 or 3 needles on the go at one time when working on an embroidery or cross-stitch so that you can carry the thread from one location on the embroidery to another. When you are not using one of the threads it is easier to leave the thread hanging off the embroidery to one side rather than finishing the thread and having to begin it again later on.

Sometimes when one has several needles on the go the threads become tangled. The best way to prevent this is to place a needle minder on the front of the fabric at the side of the frame, and place the separate magnet on the back of the fabric directly below the needle minder on the front. The minder is held in place by the magnet on the back.  The needle and threads that are not in use can then be brought up to the front of the work and placed on top of the magnetic needle minder to keep the thread out of the way (see picture of needle minder in use on the squirrel embroidery below).

When you turn the frame over to finish a thread off you do not have needles and threads dangling off the embroidery as the needles are held on the minder.

TOOL TROLLEY (TSTCP)

A tool trolley is a scissors holder with a retractable cord.

The holder can be clipped to a zipper on you jacket, attached to your top using a safely pin or worn on a necklace. The scissors are clipped into the other end.

As you are working you can pull the scissors and the scissors will retract out on a cord up 32 inches or 80 cm in length. When you have made your cut you can release the scissors and the cord will retract back in the holder. This is a great way to keep your scissors handy and close by rather than loosing them in the cushion covers on under things on the table.

A-Z OF THREAD PAINTING (MBA-TP)

Hard back book ring bound, 128 pages, from the Inspirations magazine, published by Country Bumpkin Publications.

This book has a variety of thread painting projects ranging from beginners to advanced. Thread painting is also known as needle painting, soft shading, long and short stitch and silk shading.

Designs in the book include albatross, emu, eagle, meadow song, elephant blowing bubbles, sea shell and starfish, anemones, apples, lily, rose with rose hips, fuchsia, heartsease (pansies), briar rose, dahlia, rose with spider web, pear, lavender, tulip, wine merchants window.

The book also features my baby burrowing owl which is an intermediate design, and my wolf, baby wren, spaniel and Siamese cat which are all advanced designs.

A chapter at the beginning of the book has the work in progress pictures of the long and short stitch and other stitches used on the thread painting designs. There is a chapter on working a thread painting project from beginning to end with work-in-progress photos of my baby burrowing owl.

Because of the complexity of the thread painting technique the book does not have work-in-progress photos of each of the projects featured in the book which could be a disadvantage if you are a beginner in the thread painting technique. I would suggest working one of my beginners needle painting kits prior to the projects in the thread painting book as my beginners kits have excellent comprehensive instructions giving you a good foundation in the needle painting technique.

Soft back book, 48 pages, written by Clare Hanham (trained at the Royal School of Needlework) and published by Search Press

A simple guide to needle painting. There are photograph stages of the long and short stitch on flowers, leaves and a butterfly with instructions.

You will get a better understanding of the needle painting (silk shading) technique from one of my needle painting kits as there are diagrams and more detailed instructions but it is a good book to have photograph stages of an embroidery which you would not get from my needle painting instruction booklets.

LONG AND SHORT STITCH EMBROIDERY

A Collection of Flowers (MBCETT)

Soft back book, 128 pages, written by Trish Burr and Published by Sally Milner Publishing.

A nice collection of flowers to embroider in the needle painting technique.

I would recommend this book if you have had some experience in long and short stitch.

The book does not have diagrams on how to stitch each petal and leaf of the flowers like you will get when you purchase one of my needle painting kits but it is a good book if you have worked a few of my designs and are now familiar with the technique and would like some more flower designs to stitch. I think that the flowers have a nice artistic quality.
