MOUNTMELLICK HISTORY

Mountmellick embroidery technique is easily recognized by its bold, heavy stitches, the natural floral motifs, the absence of any openwork, the predominantly surface stitches, the typical fringed edges and the general overall appearance of sculptured surface. Traditionally worked with thick cotton threads on a firm cotton satin fabric, the finished work was intended to be extremely durable and take many harsh washings. Common projects were pillow shams, quilts, sachet cases and general household items.

A convent in the town of Mountmellick, Ireland, in the center of the textile industry, is given credit for the origination of this technique in the early part of the 19th century.

MOUNTMELLICK FABRIC

The Mountmellick fabric that supply is the traditional cotton satin jean Mountmellick fabric used for Mountmellick embroidery.

The fabric is a tightly woven, 100% cotton satin, the shiny side of the fabric is embroidered upon with the matt Mountmellick Thread, giving Mountmellick its characteristic contrast.

The Mountmellick fabric is 55 inches (137 cm) wide.

Mountmellick Embroidery Threads

The Mountmellick threads that I offer are the traditional pure white 100% cotton threads used for Mountmellick embroidery. The thread has a mat surface which contrasts nicely with the traditional satin surface of Mountmellick fabric.

Mountmellick Thread #1: Is very fine and can be used for other forms of whitework including pulled work, embroidery Anglais and fine whitework.

Mountmellick Thread #2: Commonly two different weights of Mountmellick thread are used in mountmellick embroidery, #2 and #4 make a good combination or #3 and #4.

Mountmellick Thread #3: Near to the weight of #4 makes a good thread for stem stitch, satin stitch, fly stitch.

Mountmellick Thread #4: The heaviest of the Mountmellick threads, is great for padding and French Knots.

Mountmellick Knitting Cotton: Mountmellick knitting cotton is used to create the knitted fringes that edge Mountmellick embroidery. It is a completely matt, non-mercerised yarn that is finely twisted and has no fluffy bits!  50g ball, 4 ply, white, cotton. Each ball comes with complimentary instructions for two knitted fringe variations on the label. Detailed knitting instructions with diagrams are available in the Mountmellick Embroidery Inspired by Nature book. It is recommended that you knit with three or four balls to create the appropriate thickness for a mountmellick fringe.

MOUNTMELLICK CORNER DESIGN

The Corner Design is a beginner to advanced Mountmellick technique.

Working the embroidery: A variety of different embroidery stitches (approximately 15) are worked with traditional Mountmellick threads (two thicknesss' of white cotton embroidery threads) on a heavy white satin jean fabric. The stitches worked are bold giving the picture a 3-dimensional effect.

The kit has detailed instructions and lots of diagrams to guide your through the embroidery. The instructions are written with the beginner in mind and intended to guide embroiderers of any level through the embroidery from beginning to end. The fabric comes with the design hand drawn on so there are no worries about transferring the design.

I am offering free correspondence and free on going critique for this kit, for more details go to - Free on going critique.

NEEDLE MINDERS

Needlework Magnets

Beautiful and unique needlework magnets hold your extra needles while stitching your embroidery or cross-stitch. The raised areas of the minders (accept Nita's Peacock) are carved out of resin and have remarkable detail.

HOW TO USE THE MINDER

As many of us know it is easier to have 2 or 3 needles on the go at one time when working on an embroidery or cross-stitch so that you can carry the thread from one location on the embroidery to another. When you are not using one of the threads it is easier to leave the thread hanging off the embroidery to one side rather than finishing the thread and having to begin it again later on.

Sometimes when one has several needles on the go the threads become tangled. The best way to prevent this is to place a needle minder on the front of the fabric at the side of the frame, and place the separate magnet on the back of the fabric directly below the needle minder on the front. The minder is held in place by the magnet on the back.  The needle and threads that are not in use can then be brought up to the front of the work and placed on top of the magnetic needle minder to keep the thread out of the way (see picture of needle minder in use on the squirrel embroidery below).

When you turn the frame over to finish a thread off you do not have needles and threads dangling off the embroidery as the needles are held on the minder.

ERASABLE PENS

I sell two types of erasable pens which are really good for use on the Mountmellick fabric as the line is not permanent so the piece can be washed afterwards and all the design lines will disappear. The Mountmellick is also see-through enough that you place the design underneath the fabric and trace the design on.

  1. The water erasable marking pen has a pin-point tip that produces a very fine line. Use the pen for drawing embroidery designs onto fabric. When the embroidery is complete the blue pen line can be washed away. On rare occasions certain dyes in material (dyes containing red in particular) may make marks difficult to remove. If you do not want to wash your fabric then the air erasable pen can be used instead.

  2. The air erasable marking pen has a pin-point tip that produces a very fine line. The fine line marking pen makes a bright purple mark, the marks will vanish without washing, but do not iron the over the marks as it will set the marks and they cannot be removed.

RETRACTABLE SCISSORS HOLDER

This sea splash designer reel has small pieces of abalone sea shell making up the cover for the holder of the retractable cord. The holder comes with a metal clip on the back of the holder to attach the holder to your garment. and a clear plastic band at the bottom with a popper to attach the holder to your scissors.

The holder is clipped to your garment. As you are working you can pull the scissors and the scissors will retract out of the holder on a cord. When you have made your cut you can release the scissors and the cord will gently retract back in the holder. This is a great way to keep your scissors handy and close by rather than loosing them in the cushion covers on under things on the table.
