Decorative Bees Wax - Cameo or Swan

BEESWAX (TSBW)

Beeswax is used to coat sewing thread. The wax strengthens the thread and gives it a smooth coating which is especially good for goldwork so that the metal threads are less likely to snag on the sewing thread and shred it.

The regular beeswax comes in a plastic case with slots, the wax is held with in the case so that the hands do not get coated in the wax and the wax does not get dirty. The thread is run through the slot in the plastic case and is coated in the wax. Brush of any excess wax from the thread before sewing with it.

The decorative bees wax comes in a clear acrylic box and makes a great gift for the needleworker.  One side of the beeswax comes with a raised image, choice of Cameo or Swan.

Cameo Size: 1 1/4 inches (3 1/2 cm) wide by 1 3/4 inches (4 1/2 cm) high

FELT (TSF)

Felt makes an excellent padding material or foundation fabric to apply Gold threads over top.

Felt is used to pad areas and to cover up carpet felt and as a ground fabric. Several layers of felt padding can be applied to the design for a raised effect. When padding an area with more than one layer of felt it is best to cut the underneath felt layers slightly smaller. Sew down the small layers first and finish of with the largest layer on top. The largest piece of felt covers the edges of the smaller pieces so that the edges do not protrude between the metal threads sewn over the top. Felt is also used to cover the carpet felt before the gold is worked over top so that the fibres of the carpet felt do not poke between the gold pieces. The felt makes an excellent ground fabric even if padding is not required in the design. A single layer of the felt can be sewn down onto the ground fabric and the gold sewn over top. If there are gaps between the applied metal threads these gaps are less likely to show if a felt, the same colour as the metal threads is underneath (see padding of cardinal bird and branch above - the entire design area is covered in one or more layers of yellow felt).

Yellow felt is used underneath Gold threads, grey felt is used under Silver threads and brown is used under Copper threads. (More information on felt is detailed above in padding information).

SOFT COTTON THREAD (TSCC)

A soft cotton thread (Bernat crochet cotton) is used to pad narrow areas such as leaves, stems and branches (see padding of branch and leaves of Cardinal Bird above). The thread can be sewn down in bunches of two, three or four threads, sewing down the threads with a single strand of sewing thread keeping the threads within the paint lines. The ends of the threads are not taken to the back of the work but are cut of sheer at the top of the work to the edge of the design. Purl's or Japan threads are the most common metal threads to be sewn over the soft cotton threads.

The thread can be applied directly on to the ground fabric, or on top of felt. (More information on soft cotton thread is detailed above in padding information).

GOLDWORK AND BEADING PAD (TSGBP)

A goldwork and beading pad is a brilliant piece of vellux/velvet like fabric which you can use to place goldwork threads and beads on so they will stay in one place rather than skidding across a table surface.

Gold threads can be cut on the surface without easily damaging the fabric and the pad stops beads and purl chips from rolling around and makes it easy to pick up the beads or purl chips with the point of the needle.
