ANTIQUE WHITE 32 COUNT BELFAST LINEN FABRIC

Belfast linen fabric is ideal for counted embroidery such as Blackwork and cross-stitch. The fabric has a natural look as the threads of the fabric are not even. This makes is slightly harder to see the holes in the fabric as the holes vary in size. Experienced embroiderers love the look of linen fabric as it does not have the orderliness of even weave fabric giving the embroidery a romantic rustic look. The Belfast linen has a slightly smoother surface compared to Cashel linen.

I use the belfast linen fabric for my Blackwork Chickadee Kit, the Blackwork Fuchsia Kit, the Blackwork Etui Box Kit and the Blackwork Meets Cross-Stitch Designs

Antique White 32 Count Belfast Linen fabric is 55 inches (137 cm) wide.

32 COUNT MONIKA FABRIC

32 cotton MoniKa fabric (from Austria) is 50% cotton and 50% Modal (fibre made from beech wood) and is ideal for counted embroidery such as Blackwork and cross-stitch.

The fabric has even weave threads so that stitches/patterns will work out more regular than on an uneven weave such as linen fabric. It has a nice smooth surface so that when the embroidery is complete the viewer sees the embroidery and is not distracted by the fabric.

Monika fabric is from the same manufacturer that used to make the Etamin Fabric. The threads of the Monika fabric are thicker than the etamin fabric making the holes in the fabric smaller. The upside is that the Monika fabric is slightly stiffer and more durable than the Etamin fabric.

I use the Monika fabric for my Blackwork Butterfly Kits, the Blackwork Peacock Kit the Blackwork Kingfisher Kit and the Blackwork Meets Cross-Stitch Designs

The fabric is 70 inches (175 cm) wide.

This makes is slightly harder to see the holes in the fabric as the holes vary in size. Experienced embroiderers love the look of linen fabric as it does not have the orderliness of even weave fabric giving the embroidery a romantic rustic look. 28 COUNT JOBELAN FABRIC

Jobelan 28 Count: 51% cotton and 49% rayon even weave fabric. The fabric is finer in appearance compared to Aida as the threads of the fabric are closer together and it also has softer feel compared to the Aida fabric and linen fabrics. Jobelan fabric is easier to count than linen fabrics as the threads of the fabric are are the same thickness resulting in the holes being the same size.

The Jobelan fabric can be used for the Cross-Stitch Meets Blackwork designs.

The Jobelan fabric is 55 inches (138 cm) wide.

TRADITIONAL JACOBEAN LINEN TWILL FABRIC

The Jacobean Linen Twill fabric is the traditional fabric used for Jacobean crewel embroidery and is woven in Scotland.

The Linen Twill fabric is naturally stiff and heavy traditionally used for drapes over windows and around beds to ward of the cold and can be used for pictures, fire screens and cushions.

Before embroidery is begun the fabric should be washed by hand, in hand hot water, soaked for a while and then rinsed so that the stiffening is removed from the fabric. The fabric can be ironed dry on the wrong side of the fabric.

This traditional Jacobean Linen Twill fabric has the characteristic diagonal weave on both sides of the fabric.

The Jacobean Linen Twill fabric is 60 inches (150 cm) wide, and can ordered by the yard or 1/2 a yard.

SOUTHERN BELLE 100% COTTON MUSLIN FABRIC

Southern Belle Muslin fabric (Calico in European terms) is a 100% cotton fabric.

This wonderful fine quality muslin fabric has a 220 thread count (regular muslin fabric thread count starts at 70) and makes an ideal ground fabric for needle painting and other forms of free form embroidery. I use the southern belle fabric in my needle painting kits.

The warp and weft threads are closely woven allowing for very precise stitching. The fabric is soft and smooth to the feel, has no brown specks or slubs as in some muslins and has a very consistent weave unlike some broad cloths. There is very little stretch to the fabric so when pulled tight in a stretcher bar frame the fabric does not easily pucker and is firm enough to be used without a backing fabric.

The muslin fabric can be also used as a supporting fabric for the Goldwork and silk fabric embroidery projects.

The fabric does not shrink after washing and keeps the same soft feel. (The fabric does not come washed).

The muslin fabric is 44 inches (110 cm ) wide and can be purchased in yards, half yards or individual pieces.

Light Cream, speckless and slubless.

Red/Brown silk Matka is a rustic silk fabrics with larger warp and weft threads that have a range of tones in the colour of the fabric. The fabric is ideal for doing goldwork embroidery on.

Yellow Polyester Felt

Honey Biscuit Wool Felt

FELT

Felt makes an excellent padding material or foundation fabric to apply Gold threads over top.

Several layers of felt padding can be applied to the design for a raised effect. When padding an area with more than one layer of felt it is best to cut the underneath felt layers slightly smaller. Sew down the small layers first and finish of with the largest layer on top. The largest piece of felt covers the edges of the smaller pieces so that the edges do not protrude between the metal threads sewn over the top.

Felt makes an excellent ground fabric even if padding is not required in the design. A single layer of the felt can be sewn down onto the ground fabric and the gold sewn over top. If there are gaps between the applied metal threads these gaps are less likely to show if a felt, the same colour as the metal threads is underneath.

Yellow felt is used underneath Gold threads, white felt is used under Silver threads and brown is used under Copper threads.

Wool felt comes in limited colours, the closest colour to gold threads is honey biscuit which can be used for gold and copper threads.  Wool and polyester felt are both very similar in appearance and both are used for metal thread embroidery.
