Matsu - 2-year-old Female Bengal Tiger by Jane Varner

"Matsu," a 2-year-old Female

Bengal Tiger Worked by

Jane Varner in Florida, USA

This is an original "solo" effort stitched from a photograph, as you describe in your teaching. I followed the stitching sequence given for your Wolf in "A-Z of Thread Painting" to complete the bulk of the work, but also combined a couple of things from the Siamese Cat (around the nose area) as well as the eye from your Baby Wren.

Tanja Berlin's kits are absolutely the very best way to learn the techniques of needle painting.  Through the process of copying several of her images, I observed that identifiable common elements (such as shape, stitch angle, and color combinations) run through divergent subjects. For instance, the tiger has a well-defined round eye, and so I needed to select a combination of stitches that would result in round. The wren eye in "A-Z of Thread Painting" was the perfect model for this element.

Color is another element. By studying Tanja's use of color in everything from birds to fish, I found that identifying the fundamental color "family" in a subject makes final thread color selection much easier.  (For instance, Matsu's family color is DMC 433, 434, 435, and 436 with some 801 and 420.) Keeping within the color family also greatly facilitates blending and shading.
