JAPANESE THREADS

I offer several choices in the Japanese Threads.

Japanese thread is made up of a metal foil wrapped around a thread core. Japanese threads are usually couched down two threads at the time (as it fills in the design area faster) and couched down with the same colour sewing thread or a contrasting thread in a bricking fashion. If sewn down with a contrasting thread the Japanese thread can be couched down in colour in a pattern or with a range of shades, this is known as Or Nue. For a picture and description of how the Japanese thread can be used Click Here.

The Japanese threads are most commonly used for filling in flat areas on a design in the couching method. The threads come in gold which has a shiny reflective surface or burnished gold which has mat surface and an antique appearance. The Japanese threads are synthetic thread so will not tarnish.

JAPANESE GOLD THREAD

Threads range from No. 13 being the largest to No. 8 being the smallest. The Japanese threads are the goldest in colour and with the glossiest surface. The foil wrapped around the thread core is sturdy and is less likely to untwist.

  • No. 13 (K1): Approximately 1 mm across the width of the thread.

  • No. 9 (K3): Approximately 0.75 mm across the width of the thread.

  • No. 8 (K4): Approximately 0.5 mm across the width of the thread.

T69 - T72 IMITATION JAPAN THREAD

Imitation Japan Threads range from T69 being the largest to T72 being the smallest. The threads are burnished so have an antique look with a mat surface.

  • T69: Approximately 0.75 mm across the width of the thread.

  • T70: Approximately 0.5 mm across the width of the thread.

  • T71: Approximately 0.25 mm across the width of the thread.

  • T72: Approximately 0.15 mm across the width of the thread.

KREINIK IMITATION JAPAN THREAD

Kreinik Imitation Japan Threads range from No. 7 being the largest to No. 1 being the smallest. The Kreinik Japan threads are similar to the (K1), (K3) and (K4) Japanese threads but with a slightly softer foil which is not as firmly wrapped.

  • No. 7: Approximately 0.5 mm across the width of the thread.

  • No. 5: Approximately 0.25 mm across the width of the thread, comes as a skein or spool.

  • No. 1 and Cord: Approximately 0.1 mm across the width of the thread. Used to couch down the Japan threads and suitable for machine embroidery and to use in combination with other embroidery threads to add sparkle.

JAPANESE THREADS COSTS

Orders of 10 yards of Japanese threads will come in an acid free plastic bag to reduce mailing costs. Japanese threads over 10 Yards will either come in separate bags of 10 yards or come wrapped on a plastic spool (free) in which case parcel mail applies.
