BLACKWORK: 2 DAYS

In this two day blackwork class the student has a choice of the following blackwork designs to work in the class. The blackwork Peacock, Pheasants and the Kingfisher design require 2 -3 hours of prework which will be mailed out to the student prior to the class.

Chickadee

Flight of a Butterfly

Spectral Butterfly

Fuchsia

Horse 1

Horse 2

Love Bird: Just the Two of Us

Love Bird: What you Looking at?

The Following Three Designs Require 2 - 3 Hours of Prework

Kingfisher

Peacock

Pheasants

We begin the project by transferring the design on to the fabric using tissue paper and tacking method.

The student is then taught how to work the blackwork embroidery from a selection of patterns rather than from a chart of the design. The student will take a blackwork pattern and work it within the tacked out line of the design learning how to shade the pattern with different thickness' of thread and how to change a pattern by adding or diminishing stitches within the pattern.

The student will be working with either a single or double strand of DMC floss, Over Dyed floss or YLI silk to embroider the counted fabric. The blackwork stitches are worked in a backstitch and running stitch following a stitch pattern and counting the threads of the linen. The blackwork embroideries are not worked as a two-sided piece, instead the class will concentrate on working the embroidery as a 3-dimension piece.

The blackwork class is suitable for all levels of stitchers.

PULLED WORK: 2 DAYS

In this two day class the student will work either the pulled work Giraffe or their own design.

Pulled Work Giraffe

We begin the project by transferring the design on to the fabric using tissue paper and tacking method.

The student is then taught how to work the pulled work embroidery from a selection of patterns rather than from a chart of the design. The student will take a pulled work pattern and work it within the tacked out line of the design learning to use different patterns to create different effects. The student will be working with a double strand of DMC floss, on a 28 count linen fabric. This is a great class for learning the process of designing a pulled work from a picture and by working straight onto the fabric instead of charting out the design before hand.

Back of the Shadow Work Embroideries

Angelfish

Surgeonfish

Moorish Idol

Shadow Work

This technique is worked on a piece of transparent organza fabric. The design is traced onto the fabric, (choice are: Tulip, Iris, Canada Flag, Three Butterfly's, Angelfish, Squirrelfish, Forest or Tree frog). The embroidery is worked on the front with a backstitch, alternating back and forth along two lines that are parallel to each other (stripes), on the back of the work a herringbone stitch is created as the back stitches cross from one edge of the stripe to other. The herringbone shows through the fabric at the front of the work as an opaque band.

Shadow Appliqué

Shadow appliqué is also worked on a transparent piece of organza fabric. Coloured fabrics are tacked onto the back of the organza, and a punch stitch or pin stitch are worked along the lines of the design on the front of the fabric (sewing through both layers of the fabric). When the stitches have been worked any excess fabric is cut away from the back of the fabric. A Surgeonfish can be worked in the class.

Shadow Trapunto Appliqué

The design is drawn onto a piece of organza fabric (Moorish idol fish). The organza fabric is then tacked onto a piece of furnishing fabric. Backstitch is worked around the outlines of the Moorish idol. Slits are cut in the back of the furnishing fabric, and the areas between the backstitches and between the organza fabric and the furnishing fabric are stuffed with soft wool, making a colorful, padded fish.

Each shadow work technique can be learned in two - three hours. In a day class two different techniques can be covered.

The shadow work class is suitable for all levels of stitchers.

HOW I RUN MY CLASSES

I like to set the class room in a horse shoe shape so that the students can face each other. I teach my classes in a informal manner so that the student feels relaxed and is able to communicate with the other members of the class.

The students can work the framed embroidery in a frame stand or in the hand, I do recommend that the class room has excellent lighting and the student feel free to bring a light to work under. At the class I provide magnifier glasses that can be worn over regular spectacles and needle threaders which the students can borrow for the duration of the class.

I demonstrate each stitch and explain all stages of the embroidery . I visit the students individually to check on their progress and give guidance. I assume that everyone requires my attention not just a few individuals.

To the class I bring a wide selection of embroidery samples to display and embroidery kits. I have about 40 different embroidery kits and a selection of merchandise that can be purchased from me during the breaks or at a time specified by the embroidery group.
