An excellent book with many tips on goldwork embroidery and beautiful projects to do.

The book has large clear colour pictures of the projects that you can work with descriptions and photos on how to lay the metal threads. Many of the projects incorporate coloured silk threads, glass beads and stumpwork. Two of the beautiful designs are Or Nue Iris and Or Nue Rose.

This book is an inspiration for all levels of embroiderers.

A-Z OF GOLDWORK

Hard back book ring bound, 156 pages, from the Inspirations magazine, published by Country Bumpkin Publications.

An informative book on the techniques of goldwork embroidery. Each technique has step by step photos and is a great book for beginners to refer to when working embroidery kits and advanced embroiderers who would like to design their own goldwork pieces.

Techniques include:

  • Applique of goldwork.

  • Padding with felt and soft cotton.

  • Sinking and ending metal threads.

  • Double and single couching of Japanese thread and passing thread. Turning corners.  How to couch in rows and in circles using the bricking pattern or geometric patterns. Embellishments with couching. Underside couching that was used in the Opus Anglicanum period (church work embroideries).  Couching over soft cotton padding to create patterns. Couching over card to create a raised shape. Couching as a filling pattern.

  • Or Nue.

  • Sewing down Pearl Purl. Sewing down over stretched Pearl Purl using a coloured thread. Turning Pearl Purl. Wrapping Pearl Purl.

  • Sewing down Plate.

  • Cutting Purl threads. Sewing down Purl threads - chipping. Purl Chain stitch, Purl detached chain, Purl chequered filling, Lopped Purl. Sewing down Purl threads over felt and soft cotton padding. S-ing with Purl threads.

  • Spangles

  • Embroidery Stitches used with Goldwork: Back stitch, Bullion Knots, Chain stitch, Chain stitch reverse, Chain stitch heavy, French Knots, Satin stitch, Stem stitch.

  • Mounting a Goldwork embroidery onto acid free board using the lacing technique.

There are also 10 projects that can be worked from the book including the Fleur De Lys design and Plate Design that are featured on my website. This is one of the best books on the market for how to pictures of different goldwork techniques and will be of great benefit for anyone interested in Goldwork.

BEGINNERS GUIDE TO GOLDWORK

Soft back, 80 pages, written by Ruth Chamberlain and published by Search Press.

This book gives some good advice on how to prepare fabric for goldwork.

The techniques illustrated in the book are off the sampler featured on the front page of the book, and there are some great photographs on how to do couching down silk threads and Japan threads over string and in the method of Or Nue and other techniques, it is a good reference book and there is a nice use of colour with the gold threads.

The sampler is not featured as a whole but in parts.

BEETLE COLLECTION Stumpwork, Goldwork and Surface Embroidery

Hard back book, 424 pages, written by Jane Nicholas and published by Milner Craft Series.

An impressive large book containing many different beetles some which are worked individually in medallions, brooches or buttons and some worked in a scene with flowers.

Method of working is explained in detail with stitch diagrams. There are sections with stumpwork beetles and goldwork beetles and a lovely brooch worked in Or Nue. What makes this book especially pleasurable to page through is that the beetles are all masterfully executed, looking realistic and beautiful.

This book has a 60 page chapter at the beginning on the history of goldwork with colour photos. The following 30 page is a description of the different type of metal threads and photos on how they are sewn down.

The remainder of the book has 15 original projects which includes flower arrangements, Japanese garden, fan, portrait of a woman and an angel.

This is a good reference and project book.

A very Comprehensive Embroidery technique book produced by the Royal School of Needlework where I took my three year training in hand embroidery - apprenticeship course and spent a further two years in the workroom. See my Personal History for more details.

Recommended for all embroiderers. The book has sixteen step-by-step projects ranging from easy to hard in four embroidery techniques.

It is a valuable source of reference and a beautiful book for the needle crafter's library.

This book is great accompaniment for any of my embroidery techniques.

History of the

Royal School of Needlework

Founded in 1872 by Queen Victoria's third daughter, Princess Christian of Schleswig-Holstein, the school enjoys the patronage of members of the Royal Family. H.M. Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, is the School's current Patron and its President is H.R.H. the Duchess of Glouchester. The Royal School of Needlework specializes in the restoration and conservation of all textiles using traditional hand embroidery techniques.

The School's main objective is to ensure that the traditional skills of hand embroidery are passed on to the next generation.

As well as short courses in a variety of needlework techniques, they run an apprenticeship scheme and a one year certification course that attracts keen embroiderers from all over the country and abroad.
