BLACKWORK HORSE 1 MANGALARGA

The blackwork horse is a beginners blackwork kit.

The blackwork horse is worked in blackwork patterns on 16 count or 32 count fabric using embroidery cotton.

Working the embroidery: The blackwork embroidery is worked within a tacked outline of the design with a variety of different blackwork stitches.  A dimensional picture is created by reducing the stitches in the pattern. A large chart is included with the instruction booklet as a reference tool but the embroidery is worked in the Tissue Paper Transfer Method. The patterns are stitched from step-by-step individual diagrams and there are detailed instructions on how to work the embroidery.

I am offering free correspondence and free on going critique for this kit, for more details go to - Free on going critique.

There is a choice of fabrics to work the blackwork design:

  • The original embroidery is worked on 16 count heatherfield fabric which is 100% poly acrylic fabric, it is mottled grey with darker grey and gold flecks. It is a lovely natural looking fabric that compliments the variegated embroidery floss that is used to work the blackwork embroidery and is easy to count.

  • The embroidery can also be worked on 32 count antique white Belfast 100% Linen fabric  with uneven weave threads (different thicknesses) giving a natural look.

  • Or 32 count antique white Monika fabric (50% cotton and 50% Modal). The fabric has even weave threads (all threads are the same thickness) and is soft and smooth to the touch. The patterns come out more even on the even weave fabric compared to the linen fabric.

BLACKWORK ELEPHANT

Four Day Class:The blackwork elephant is an advanced blackwork technique that I will be teaching at the Embroiderers Association of Canada national seminar in May 2015 in my home city of Calgary, Alberta, Canada. For more details about the seminar visit the EAC website.

This will be an ideal class for students who have taken a previous blackwork class with me where they learnt the tissue paper and tacking method of transferring the design onto the fabric. The elephant will not be worked 2-sided blackwork embroidery so you do not need experience in 2-sided blackwork embroidery!

There will be approximately 14 - 20 hours of pre-work where the design is transferred onto the fabric. This is a simple but time consuming and essential element to the embroidery. No outlines are used on the blackwork embroidery so a tacked outline is put on the fabric first as your guide for working the embroidery, which will be removed as you are stitching the blackwork patterns. This will create a very realistic and dimensional embroidery.

There are only four blackwork patterns worked on the elephant, emphasis will be shading with these patterns by adding or taking out stitches in the pattern and changing the thickness of the embroidery thread. There are five different thickness of thread used to work the blackwork patterns.

No artistic skills are required to work the blackwork patterns but a confidence in stitching is required. Tentative and slow stitchers will find this piece daunting.

I will be running the blackwork elephant as an on-line class in the future after the EAC seminar but it would be a great asset to come and attend the class in Calgary as you can join any future on-line classes that I run on the elephant for free, to continue working your elephant. The on-line class will run at the same cost as a seminar class so there is no point in hanging on for the on-line class if you think the cost will be less there is an advantage to taking the seminar class with me. As part of the class you will get over 100 work-in-progress pictures of each stage of the embroidery in PDF file format so that you can refer to these pictures when working your embroidery.

Come and enjoy the atmosphere of seminar and learn how to bring out your artistic side in a step-by-step format of blackwork embroidery.

Prerequisite for taking the blackwork elephant class is that you must have worked at least one of my blackwork designs in the tissue paper tacking method and have confidence in this method.  The elephant will not be worked 2-sided blackwork embroidery and will not be worked from one large chart of the design but from the individual patterns. You will be guided where you need to work the patterns from me in person and from the instructions that will come with the kit.

Below are just a few of the photo stages of the elephant. For more work-in-progress pictures click here

Trunk Stage 1: Additional stitches are added to the foundation pattern to represent lines and shading on the trunk.

Head:  The head is worked in a larger a variation of the pattern worked on stage 3 of the trunk.

Left and Right Ears:  The pattern on the left and right ear is the same pattern as on the head but using the thicker embroidery threads and more stitches are added to the pattern.
